UUID v4 Guide for Developers: Uniqueness, Format, and Local Generation

What a UUID v4 is
A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier), often called a GUID in Microsoft ecosystems, is a 128-bit value used as an identifier. Version 4 UUIDs are mostly random. They are ideal when you need IDs that do not require a central counter—client-generated row keys, idempotency tokens, test fixtures, and export filenames.

Reading the 8-4-4-4-12 layout
The canonical string form is eight hex digits, hyphen, four, hyphen, four, hyphen, four, hyphen, twelve—for example 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000. In v4, the version nibble is 4, and the variant bits follow RFC 4122. Compact forms drop hyphens and keep 32 hex characters; the underlying bits are the same.
Collision reality check
Random v4 IDs have 122 bits of randomness after version/variant bits are reserved. For everyday app volumes, collision risk is negligible—so low that teams still add database uniqueness constraints as defense in depth, not because collisions are expected. If you need time-sortable IDs, look at UUIDv7 or ULID designs; v4 is about uniqueness, not ordering.
When to generate locally
Local generation is perfect for fixtures, sample data, and client-created entities that will be reconciled later. It is also the right default when you do not want an online generator to log your IDs. Bulk-create 50 test users, download the list, and seed your DB without pasting into a hosted tool.
Implementation notes
- Prefer crypto.randomUUID() when available; fall back to getRandomValues with correct version/variant bits.
- Do not invent “almost random” IDs from Math.random() for security-sensitive tokens.
- Store UUIDs in native UUID columns when your database supports them.
- Be consistent about hyphenated vs compact form in APIs and filenames.
Bottom line
UUID v4 is a boring, dependable random identifier. Generate it locally, pick a stable string format, enforce uniqueness at the datastore, and move on to the product problem.
